Another Surface of the Earth A project of Tower of Pisa was underway in Italy since 1996
The horizon is the line dividing solemnly the heaven and the earth far off beyond the sea and the land.
“Line” sometimes appears between two things, which have no real substance. I have drawn “lines” at places where I go―in an empty lot, a gallery, on a building, a wall, stairs, shutters, a pond and pavements. “Line” affects even possession, division and at times legislative realm, and depending on the situation in which “lines” are drawn, concepts such as division, connection, sign, inspiration, territory, occupation and length arise. My art resembles “ad-joint lines” exploring new space by drawing “lines.”
My overseas projects (Pyramid・Pinnacles・Pisa) were conducted as 3P-PROJECT because coincidentally all three project titles begin with the letter P.
In August 1991, I drew a 2km-long line from the desert to the ridgeline (southwest) of the 2nd pyramid (Khafre’s Pyramid) in Giza, Egypt. The concept of the project is that the line that reaches the pyramid’s feet will go up into the sky.
In August 1995, I held a Kare-Sansui project (a dry landscape garden representing hills and streams without using water) in the pinnacle desert in the Nambung National Park, Western Australia. I drew circle ripple marks surrounding eerie pinnacles rising out of sand dunes, which are said to have been created about 80,000 years ago.
In September 2001, at the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, I planned a project in which “another surface of the earth” vertical to the inclination of the tower is to be created in the Miracoli Plaza of the Cathedral. It is a reproduction project to view the tower, which was standing straight at the time of construction. Regrettably, however, it was cancelled just before the implementation due to the Ronkey law concerning the Miracoli Plaza. I had been working on this project since 1996 until it was cancelled.
